Description

The Eagle Nebula (Messier 16 / NGC 6611) is a young open cluster of stars in the constellationSerpens. The "Eagle" refers to visual impressions of the dark silhouette near the center of the nebula, an area made famous as the "Pillars of Creation" imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope. The nebula contains several active star-forminggas and dust regions, including the Pillars of Creation. The nebula lies approximately 5,700 light-years from Earth in the Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way.  The open cluster associated with the nebula comprises approximately 8100 stars, most of which are concentrated in a gap in the molecular cloud to the north-west of the Pillars.

Imaging data acquired using iTelescope's T71 system located at Deep Sky Chile, Rio Hurtado Valley, Chile.
